Chris Telfer is currently serving her first term as the Republican State Senator for District 27, representing Deschutes County in Central Oregon. Chris announced in October, 2011, her run for re-election to her Senate seat. Chris, who according to the latest polls is favored more than 2 to 1 by the 83% of voters in her district for whom her name is familiar, is favored to win in the 2012 Primary and looking forward to the General election.
Earning the reputation as THE fiscal conservative in the Legislature, Chris has stood by her promise to be a voice of reason and has produced results. Lots of results. As a member of both the Minority and the Superminority, Chris has proven that you don't have to be holding the gavel to get things done. In her freshman session, Chris managed to gain support to pass 10 of her 12 Chief-sponsored bills and in just this last session, she was one of the very few members who can boast overwhelming bipartisan support on all of her legislative priorities. Chris' job creation efforts will not only open doors to bring thousands of jobs to Central Oregon, but to Oregonians all over the state.
Chris has also been persistant in drilling down on the state's agency accounting practices. She's made some major progress in discovering millions in unrestricted reserve funds and is spearheading the efforts to hold agencies more accountable and get the state's accounting practices unified so the Legislature has the tools needed to do its job in balancing the budget. Chris led the charge in working against Measures 66 & 67 and will continue to work hard for transparency, accountability and smaller and more streamlined government.
As a Co-Chair in the extremely political redistricting process, Chris and her colleagues defeated the odds by successfully drawing the House, Senate and Congressional districts - something that had not been accomplished by the Legislature in 100 years. Her tough, no-nonsense approach paired with her ability and willingness to find common ground have earned her the respect and trust of her colleagues.
Chris has been a Certified Public Accountant for over 30 years and actively practices in her CPA firm in Bend. She is a longtime small business owner, community leader, former Bend City Councilwoman and highly respected fiscally conservative elected official. Chris is the only CPA currently serving in the Oregon State Senate and her financial expertise serves Oregonians well. Her input and opinions are highly valued by her fellow legislators and when she speaks, they listen. |
